Exploring The Rotunda Museum

From fossils found on East Yorkshire’s Dinosaur Coast, through to the skeleton and coffin of a Bronze Age man, The Rotunda Museum is full of fascinating history waiting to be explored. No matter what time of year, Scarborough's most-loved museum makes for a perfect day trip, and being located right on our doorstep, you won't have very far to wander to unearth East Yorkshire's history.

The Rotunda

Designed by William ‘Strata’ Smith who is commonly known as the ‘father of English Geology’, The Rotunda building is an exhibit in itself. One of the world’s first purpose-built museums, its circular structure and inspiring interior makes it a popular sight-seeing destination. Inside, the museum features a Georgian gallery showcasing the geology of the local coastline (designed by Smith’s nephew, John Philips).

Star Carr display

Star Carr is one of the most important Early Middle Stone Age sites ever found and it is right on our doorstep; only a few miles south of Scarborough. The site, which stood on the edge of a now extinct lake called Lake Flixton, was discovered in the late 1940s and dates from around 11,000 years ago. The range of artefacts found at Star Carr and scientific studies of the landscape have revealed more about life at the time than any other site in the world.
