Experience Scarborough Open Air Theatre

Built in the 1930s, Scarborough Open Air Theatre has enjoyed an exciting history as the town's unique home of local theatre productions. From classic musicals such as 'West Side Story' to elegant orchestral affairs, the theatre has long been a buzzing hub of music, culture and arts.

Early beginnings

Constructed in the 1930s, the theatre offered a unique setting from the get go, occupying a small island in the middle of a lake with fixed seating positioned opposite. It opened during the golden age of British seaside resorts and hosted an impressive calendar of spectacular stage productions that dazzled the audience.

Decline and closure

The theatre continued to enjoy success through to the 1960s, setting a string of audience member records in the process. By 1968, musicals were no longer performed at the theatre, with the production buildings later demolished. By 1986, the decision had been made to close the theatre which meant it was left in a derelict state for more than 20 years.

A modern-day music venue

Following an extensive multi-million pound refurbishment the theatre re-opened in 2010 and has quickly become a hub of music concerts and local community events. The theatre has since played host to an impressive roster of world-famous musicians including the likes of Elton John, Britney Spears, and Kaiser Chiefs.
